Past - Present - Future

A simple three-card spread showing the timeline of your situation.

Overview

Three cards, left to right, telling a story with a beginning, middle, and an ending that hasn't been written yet. The Past - Present - Future spread is the workhorse of tarot — simple enough for a morning check-in, structured enough to reveal patterns you've been too close to notice.

What sets this apart from the other 3-card layouts (Mind-Body-Spirit, Situation-Obstacle-Advice) is the timeline. You're not slicing a moment into layers — you're watching something move. The past card explains how you arrived here. The present card shows what's actually happening (not what you think is happening). The future card shows where momentum is carrying you if nothing changes.

Card Positions

1

Past

What led to this moment

Look for the event, decision, or pattern from the last few months that set the current situation in motion. This isn't ancient history — it's the specific thing that planted the seed. If you pull a card that seems unrelated, ask yourself: what happened 3-6 months ago that I wrote off but might still be shaping things?

2

Present

Where you are now

Your actual current state, which may not match how you've been describing the situation to yourself or others. If this card contradicts your narrative, trust the card — you might be closer to a resolution than you think, or further from one than you've admitted. Look at the suit for clues: Cups = emotional reality, Swords = mental state, Wands = drive and energy, Pentacles = practical circumstances.

3

Future

Where things are heading

Where things are heading based on current actions and mindset. This is a trajectory, not a verdict. If you don't like what you see, look back at the Present card — that's where you have leverage to redirect. A difficult future card after a positive present means the current approach has an expiration date.

How to Read This Spread

Read left to right as a narrative arc. Start with the Past card and name the specific event or pattern it points to — don't leave it abstract. Then move to the Present and check honestly: does this match how you experience your situation right now?

The key insight lives in the transitions. The shift from Past to Present tells you what changed. The shift from Present to Future tells you what will change if you stay on course. If Past and Future cards share a suit or theme but the Present is different, you may be in a temporary interruption of a longer pattern.

Compare the first and third cards directly. If they tell a coherent story (struggle → resolution, or stability → disruption), the trajectory is clear. If they seem unrelated, the Present card is the pivot — something happening right now is redirecting the story.
