Celtic Cross

The most famous and comprehensive tarot spread for deep, thorough analysis.

Overview

You've been circling the same question for weeks. You've weighed the pros and cons, talked it through with friends, and you're still stuck. That's when the Celtic Cross earns its reputation as the most thorough spread in tarot. Ten cards lay out not just what's happening now, but why you got here, what you're not seeing, and where the current trajectory leads.

The spread works in two halves. The first six cards form the cross — your situation, the obstacle sitting on top of it, the foundation underneath, what's fading, what's possible, and what's coming next. The final four cards form the staff — how you see yourself, how others see you, what you secretly hope or fear, and the outcome if nothing changes. Together, they give you a 360-degree view that no 3-card spread can match.

Card Positions

1

Present

The heart of the matter

This is ground zero — the card that captures the core of what you're asking about. Look for themes that match what keeps you up at night. If the card seems unrelated to your question, pay closer attention: it may be pointing to the real issue underneath the one you think you're asking about.

2

Challenge

What crosses you

Laid sideways across the first card, this position shows what's blocking you or creating friction. It's not necessarily negative — sometimes a "good" card here means an opportunity you're resisting, or a strength you're overusing until it becomes a problem.

3

Foundation

The basis of the situation

Dig into the roots. This card reveals what's underneath the situation — events from months or years ago, beliefs you absorbed growing up, or patterns so familiar you've stopped noticing them. This is the "why does this keep happening?" card.

4

Recent Past

What is passing

Something that happened in the last few weeks or months is still casting a shadow. This card shows what's fading but hasn't fully let go. Pay attention to whether this card feels like relief (something ending) or loss (something slipping away).

5

Crown

Best possible outcome

The best possible version of how this could go. This isn't a guarantee — it's the ceiling. If the outcome card (card 10) reflects the same themes, you're on track. If it doesn't, the gap between them shows you what needs to change.

6

Near Future

What is coming

What's likely to happen in the next 2-4 weeks based on current momentum. This card isn't set in stone — it shows the direction things are moving, not a locked-in destination. Compare it with the Crown to see if you're moving toward or away from the best-case scenario.

7

Self

Your position

How you're showing up in this situation — not how you want to appear, but how you actually are. If this card surprises you, that mismatch between self-image and behavior is usually worth more attention than the rest of the reading.

8

Environment

External influences

External forces and other people's influence. This card shows what's coming at you from outside — a partner's expectations, workplace pressure, family dynamics, or social norms that are shaping the situation whether you acknowledge them or not.

9

Hopes and Fears

Your hopes and fears

These often turn out to be the same thing. What you desperately want and what you're terrified of are frequently two sides of one coin. A positive card here can mean you're closer to what you want than you admit. A difficult card often signals that part of you already knows this path has a cost you haven't faced yet.

10

Outcome

Final outcome

Where things are heading if the current trajectory continues unchanged. This is not fate — it's a forecast. If you don't like what you see, look back at the Challenge and Self positions. Those are the two levers you can actually pull to change the outcome.

How to Read This Spread

Start with cards 1 and 2 together — the situation and its obstacle. These two cards set up the central tension of the entire reading. Everything else orbits around this pair.

Next, read the timeline: card 3 (Foundation) through card 4 (Recent Past) to card 6 (Near Future). This shows the arc of how you got here and where momentum is carrying you.

Then check the staff (cards 7-10) from bottom to top. Card 7 (Self) and card 8 (Environment) show the internal-external split — are you and the world around you aligned or pulling in different directions?

The most revealing comparison is card 5 (Crown) vs card 10 (Outcome). If they point in the same direction, you're on the path to the best possible result. If they clash, cards 2 (Challenge) and 7 (Self) tell you what's in the way.

Finally, look for card relationships: cards from the same suit suggest a consistent theme. Multiple Major Arcana indicate forces bigger than everyday decisions.
