Goal Achievement

Analyze your path to achieving a specific goal or dream.

Overview

You've named the goal. Maybe you've even started working toward it. But something's not clicking — progress is slower than expected, or you're busy without getting closer. The Goal Achievement spread treats your goal like a project and gives you a strategic readout: assets, liabilities, action items, and pitfalls.

The layout flows from top (the goal itself) through two diagnostic rows (strengths/obstacles, then do/avoid) to the bottom (outcome). It's structured like a SWOT analysis in card form. What makes this spread different from the Problem Solver or Decision Spread is the focus on forward motion toward something specific, rather than analyzing a problem or comparing options.

Card Positions

1

Goal

What you're striving for

Not just the goal as you've stated it, but what the goal actually represents. If your stated goal is "get promoted" but the card reveals themes of freedom or independence, the real goal might be autonomy — and a promotion in a micromanaged environment won't satisfy it. Read this card as the truth behind the ambition.

2

Strengths

Your advantages

What you already have working in your favor — skills, relationships, resources, or habits that support this goal. These aren't things to build; they're things to deploy. If you pull a card here that doesn't feel like a strength, consider whether you've been undervaluing a quality you actually possess.

3

Obstacles

What stands in the way

What's actively working against your progress. This might be external (lack of money, a gatekeeper, bad timing) or internal (procrastination, perfectionism, fear of visibility). Court cards here often point to a specific person whose influence is blocking your path. Reversed cards suggest the obstacle is one you created and maintain yourself.

4

Do This

Actions to take

A specific action to take — read this card as a direct instruction, not a suggestion. Swords mean communicate, decide, or cut something loose. Pentacles mean build, invest, or do the boring practical work. Wands mean start, pitch, or take initiative. Cups mean connect, repair a relationship, or be honest about what you feel. Major Arcana here means the action required is bigger than a single task — it's a shift in approach.

5

Avoid This

What to steer clear of

A behavior, mindset, or decision that will derail your progress if you keep doing it. This card is often the most uncomfortable to read because it usually describes something you're currently doing. Read it without defensiveness: what habit or pattern does this card describe that you'd rather not examine? That's probably it.

6

Outcome

Likely result

The likely result if you leverage your strengths, address the obstacle, follow the "do" instruction, and avoid the pitfall. This is conditional — it's the outcome of acting on the spread's guidance, not a guaranteed forecast. If the card is disappointing, check whether the Goal card (position 1) revealed a misalignment between what you say you want and what you actually need.

How to Read This Spread

Read the Goal card first and be honest about whether it confirms or challenges your stated ambition. If there's a gap between your goal and what the card shows, the entire reading shifts — you might be pursuing the wrong target.

Next, read Strengths and Obstacles as a pair. The relationship between these two cards tells you whether the challenge is about deploying what you have (strength card is strong, obstacle is manageable) or whether you're facing a genuine deficit that needs addressing first.

The Do/Avoid pair is the action plan. Read "Do This" as your primary task for the next 2-4 weeks. Read "Avoid This" as the specific habit or pattern to stop. These two cards should directly address the dynamic shown in the Strengths/Obstacles pair.

Finally, check the Outcome against the Goal. Do they match? If the Outcome card reflects a different kind of success than what you expected, consider whether you'd actually be satisfied with what's shown. Sometimes the spread reveals that achieving the goal won't give you what you thought it would.
