Oracle cards as a distinct category split off from tarot in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when European cartomancers started creating decks that weren't bound by the 78-card tarot structure. The Lenormand deck — named after French fortune-teller Marie Anne Lenormand, who died in 1843 — is one of the earliest and most influential examples, though the decks sold under her name were mostly published after her death. By the 20th century, artists and spiritual teachers were designing entirely freeform decks with their own symbolism and card counts. The 1990s and 2000s saw a major surge, driven largely by New Age publishing, with authors like Doreen Virtue producing bestselling oracle systems that reached mainstream audiences worldwide.
