Moon Water

Making moon water is one of the simplest and most accessible ritual practices. Clean water is placed in a glass or crystal container outdoors or on a windowsill under the moonlight, usually overnight during a full moon. The water is believed to absorb the Moon's vibrational energy, becoming a versatile spiritual tool. Full moon water is used for cleansing and releasing: adding it to baths for energetic purification, spraying it around rooms, watering plants with intention, or anointing candles for release rituals. New moon water carries the energy of fresh beginnings and is used for intention-setting and manifestation work. Some practitioners add crystals (water-safe varieties only), herbs, or flowers to their moon water for additional properties. Others label their moon water with the zodiac sign of the Moon at the time of charging, using different batches for different magical purposes throughout the month.

The practice of charging water under moonlight shows up across multiple cultures long before it had a single name. Ancient Roman and Greek writers noted lunar influence on water, tides, and crops — Pliny the Elder's *Naturalis Historia* (77 CE) discusses the moon's pull on moisture and dew. In folk traditions across Europe and the Middle East, water left out during a full moon was considered purified or potentized, used in herbalism and healing. The modern Wiccan and neopagan revival of the 20th century, shaped largely by Gerald Gardner's work in the 1950s, formalized moon water as a ritual tool for cleansing and spellwork. The term itself is English, straightforward in its construction, and gained widespread use as Wicca spread through the United States and UK from the 1970s onward.

Use a glass container (not plastic) and cover it with a cloth to keep debris out. Label with the date and Moon phase/sign. Store in a cool, dark place and use within a month. Add to bath water for energetic cleansing. Spray around your home for space clearing. Never use moon water made with toxic crystals.
