Apparition

Apparitions range from transparent, misty forms to solid-looking figures indistinguishable from living people until they vanish. They may appear for seconds or minutes, may be seen by one person or multiple witnesses simultaneously, and occasionally interact with the physical environment (opening doors, leaving footprints, displacing objects). Categories of apparitions include: crisis apparitions (appearing to a loved one at the moment of death), post-mortem apparitions (appearing after death, sometimes repeatedly), collective apparitions (seen by multiple witnesses), and apparitions of the living (the appearance of someone still alive, appearing at a location where they are not physically present). The most compelling apparition cases involve multiple independent witnesses who describe the same figure without prior communication, or cases where the apparition provides information unknown to the witness that is later verified. These features resist easy psychological explanation.

Apparition reports have a long literary trail: Pliny the Younger described a haunted house at Athens in *Letters* 7.27 (~c. 100 CE), and medieval ghost-narratives appear across Christian, Islamic, and Buddhist texts. The first systematic empirical study was the Society for Psychical Research's *Phantasms of the Living* (Gurney, Myers, and Podmore, 1886), a two-volume collection of more than 700 first-hand cases. The follow-up *Census of Hallucinations* (Sidgwick et al., 1894), based on a survey of 17,000 people, found that roughly 10% reported at least one waking apparition; the rate was higher for women and for crisis-apparition cases coinciding with the death of a relative. Modern research (Bering 2011, Cardeña et al. 2015) places similar prevalence at 8–14% depending on the survey instrument.

If you see an apparition, stay where you are and note details before they fade: clothing, facial features, emotional tone, posture, whether the figure makes eye contact or acknowledges your presence, and the exact time. Write it down within minutes; recall fades quickly and details that seem certain at the time shift in retrospective accounts. If anyone else was present, write your accounts separately before comparing — this is how the SPR distinguished collective from suggestive reports. Most reported apparitions do not interact aggressively with observers, but if you're unsettled, an outside check (sleep deprivation, fever, medications with hallucinogenic side effects) is worth ruling out before settling on a paranormal frame.
