Personality Number

Most people have a gap between who they are privately and how they come across to strangers. The Personality Number maps that gap. It's built entirely from consonants because, in modern numerology, consonants carry the harder, more external sound — the part of your name other people hear and feel first. Vowels go to the Soul Urge Number instead, which covers inner motivation. So the Personality Number is specifically about surface signal: how you dress, carry yourself, and land in a room full of people who don't know you yet. A 1 reads as confident and self-directed even when they're nervous. An 8 projects authority whether they intend to or not. A 2 tends to come across as approachable and non-threatening. The Personality Number as a distinct calculation belongs to 20th-century Western numerology, not to Pythagoras. The modern system of breaking a name into vowels and consonants — assigning separate numbers to each — was developed through the work of L. Dow Balliett, who published foundational numerology texts in the early 1900s, and later formalized by Juno Jordan through the California Institute of Numerical Research in 1972. Jordan's book "Numerology: The Romance in Your Name" (1965) established much of the vocabulary still in use today, including the vowel/consonant split. Authors like Hans Decoz and Faith Javane expanded on this framework in the 1980s and 1990s, cementing the Personality Number as a standard component alongside the Life Path and Expression Numbers.

Write out your full birth name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate — middle name included. Cross out all vowels (A, E, I, O, U). Assign each remaining consonant its Pythagorean value: B=2, C=3, D=4, F=6, G=7, H=8, and so on. Add everything up and reduce to a single digit unless you land on 11, 22, or 33 — practitioners like Hans Decoz hold those as master numbers rather than reducing further.
