Mantra
Meditation & MindfulnessDefinition
A sacred word, sound, or phrase repeated during meditation or spiritual practice.
Detailed Explanation
Mantras are used in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other spiritual traditions to focus the mind and invoke spiritual energies. The most famous mantra is "Om" (or "Aum"), considered the primordial sound of the universe. Mantra repetition, or japa, is believed to create vibrations that align the practitioner with higher consciousness and bring about transformation.
History & Origins
The word mantra comes from Sanskrit: "man" (mind) and "tra" (tool or instrument), making it literally a tool for the mind. The earliest mantras appear in the Rigveda, composed roughly between 1500 and 1200 BCE in the northwestern Indian subcontinent — making them among the oldest recorded religious texts in any language. From there, mantra practice spread through the Vedic tradition into classical Hinduism, then into Buddhism by around the 5th century BCE, where shorter formulas like "Om mani padme hum" became central to Tibetan practice. Tantric traditions, both Hindu and Buddhist, developed elaborate mantra systems between roughly the 5th and 10th centuries CE. The concept later influenced Sikhism, where the Guru Granth Sahib treats certain phrases as mantra-like repetitions for meditation.
Practical Tips
Start with a single mantra rather than shopping around for the perfect one. Om Namah Shivaya and So Hum are both widely used and well-documented — either works fine for a beginner. Sit for 10 minutes, repeat the mantra silently, and when your mind wanders (it will), come back to the sound without making a thing of it. If you want structured instruction, David Frawley's writing on mantra in the Vedic tradition is solid and grounded. The app Insight Timer has guided mantra sessions if sitting alone feels awkward at first. Repetition is the whole point — consistency over intensity.
