Oneiromancy

Oneiromancy treats dreams as a direct communication channel between the divine (or the deeper self) and the conscious mind. Unlike modern psychological dream interpretation, which focuses on personal symbolism and emotional processing, oneiromancy emphasizes dreams' prophetic and revelatory potential. Traditional oneiromancy developed systematic approaches to dream interpretation. Specific symbols carried fixed meanings: water indicated emotions and the unconscious, flying suggested freedom or ambition, snakes represented transformation or hidden threats. Context, timing, and the dreamer's circumstances modified these base meanings. Modern practitioners blend ancient oneiromantic techniques with contemporary dream psychology, creating a richer interpretive framework. They use dream incubation (deliberately seeking guidance through dreams), keep detailed dream journals, and develop personalized symbol dictionaries while also consulting traditional correspondences.

Oneiromancy is one of the oldest divination practices. The ancient Egyptians maintained temple "dream interpreters" and produced the Chester Beatty Papyrus (c. 1275 BCE), one of the earliest known dream interpretation guides. The Greek tradition of temple incubation (sleeping in Asclepius temples for healing dreams) was a formalized oneiromantic practice. Artemidorus's "Oneirocritica" (2nd century CE) remained the standard dream interpretation reference for over a millennium.
